Why Wedding Gown Cleaning Matters

Your Gown Carries Stains
You Can't Even See Yet

One of the most important things to understand about wedding gown cleaning is this: the most damaging stains are the ones that are invisible immediately after the wedding. Champagne, white wine, clear soda, and sugary beverages dry without visible trace — but they begin oxidizing almost immediately and will yellow and brown as the months pass.

By the time a stain becomes visible, it may already have bonded with the fabric fibers in ways that make removal much more difficult — or, in some cases, impossible. Early treatment is everything in bridal gown care.

At Wally's, we treat every square inch of your gown — not just the stains you can see. Our bridal cleaning process addresses visible soiling, invisible oxidation stains, hemline ground-in dirt, perspiration staining at the bodice, and makeup transfer at the neckline. Nothing is overlooked.

We recommend bringing your gown to us within 4–6 weeks of your wedding. The sooner we begin, the better the outcome.

Full Inspection First

We examine every inch of your gown before we begin — documenting every area of concern and discussing our approach with you completely transparently.

Individual Stain Treatment

Every stain type requires a different treatment. We address each one individually — not with a blanket approach that may be correct for one but wrong for another.

Hand-Cleaning of Details

Beading, lace, silk flowers, crystals, and embroidery are hand-cleaned individually. We never put delicate embellishments through a standard cleaning cycle.

Expert Pressing & Finishing

After cleaning, your gown is hand-pressed and finished to restore it to its original beauty — soft, smooth, and luminous.

Cleaning Process

Our Wedding Gown
Cleaning Process

1

Consultation & Inspection

We begin with a complete gown inspection — examining every inch, noting fabric types, documenting all visible stains, and assessing areas of invisible oxidation risk. We discuss our approach with you fully before beginning.

2

Stain Mapping & Pre-Treatment

Each stain is individually identified and pre-treated with the appropriate solvent. Invisible stains from food and beverages receive oxidation treatment. Hemline and bodice areas receive specialized attention.

3

Fabric-Appropriate Cleaning

Your gown is cleaned using the correct method for its specific fabric construction. Delicate areas — lace overlays, beaded sections, silk flowers — are hand-cleaned separately while structured sections are cleaned appropriately.

4

Post-Cleaning Inspection

Every stain area is re-examined after cleaning. If any staining remains, we re-treat and re-clean before proceeding. We do not sign off on a gown until we are fully satisfied with the result.

5

Hand-Pressing & Finishing

Your gown is hand-pressed throughout — skirt, bodice, sleeves, train — and finished to restore its original beauty. Beading and embellishments are checked and any loose items addressed.

Questions

Wedding Gown Cleaning
Questions Answered

As soon as possible — ideally within 4–6 weeks. Invisible sugar stains from champagne and other beverages begin oxidizing immediately and become progressively harder to treat as time passes. Early treatment almost always achieves better results than delayed treatment.

In most cases, yes — especially when the gown arrives within a few weeks of the event. Red wine, champagne, food stains, and grass are all stains we work with regularly. Success depends on the fabric type, how long the stain has been untreated, and the stain itself. We assess every gown and give you honest expectations before beginning.

Most wedding gown cleaning takes 2–4 weeks. This allows proper time for stain treatment, cleaning, post-cleaning inspection, and hand-finishing. If you want to add preservation packaging, the total is typically 3–4 weeks. Rush service is sometimes available — ask us when you schedule.

We recommend booking a free consultation so our bridal specialist can inspect your gown with you and document its condition. Bring your gown to our Detroit facility and we'll walk through everything together — no obligation.
